So you say you haven’t had a great Merlot in a long time…

Blackbird Arise 2016

Merlot dominant blend that shows the strength of the varietal. Too often an underused voice in the orchestra, the Merlot here grounds the blend with a mouth-filling velvet texture which is layered with enough brightness to keep the wine feeling fresh on the palate.

Arise offers beautiful fresh cut herbs and plenty of crushed stone flavours that make it more compelling than many wines of a similar style and price.

This wine is dark, with hues of red and purple that are opaque in saturation. Aromatics of wild herbs stimulate the senses as you meander to a sweet nose of black cherry, blackberries, cassis, and liquid minerals. A harmonious balance of tannins, acidity, concentrated black fruits, and roasted Herbes de Provence, yield to a bold and lengthy finish. Not French, not California, but pure Rockpile Syrah.

From one of the First Families of Barbaresco

2015 Paitin Barbaresco Serraboella

Hay, freshly cut grass and loam aromas segue to a core of cherry that pulls this together. The sweet fruit handles the burly tannins well, ending in a cascade of eucalyptus and tobacco notes. Best from 2023 through 2043. -B.S.
